Scouts on the Water — Troop 1262 Casting Clinic & Fish-Out

August 2025

High Country Fly Fishers (HCFF) and Bonneville Fly Fishers teamed up with Boy Scouts of America Troop 1262 for two youth-focused events: a casting clinic at Willow Pond Park (Murray) and a follow-up Fish-Out at Lost Lake in the High Uintas.

Volunteers coached the scouts on safe casting fundamentals (grip, stance, straight-line path, and timing), simple leader setup, and gentle fish handling. The fish weren’t huge, but they were eager—perfect for new anglers. Fred dialed in fly selection and kept everyone on fish, and the banks echoed with whoops and big smiles.

Beyond catching fish, we emphasized conservation and stewardship—clean water, careful releases, and leaving each shoreline better than we found it. A huge thank-you to the Troop 1262 leaders and parents, to our HCFF and Bonneville volunteers, and to everyone who made the day run smoothly.

It was a good time for scouts and volunteers alike, and we’re hopeful a few future stewards of trout and their habitats were born.
